Torch, No. 1

Torch, No. 1, Opus 6 for Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, and String Quintet.

I wrote “Torch, No. 1,” Opus 6 for Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, and String Orchestra in 2003. This composition was premiered by the Cadence Chamber Orchestra with Tigran Arakelyan as conductor in Seattle, WA. Inspired by the live performance, I made a version of “Torch, No. 1” for Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, and String Quintet. This version was premiered by the California Chamber Players and I at the Piano in San Francisco, CA.

Writing a composition on the greyhound bus going to Wildwood, NJ from New York City would not be your normal way of writing musical compositions. But in 2003, that is how I wrote my piece, Torch No. 1 for Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, and String Orchestra. The main idea behind “Torch, No. 1” was the unwavering stance of my morals and ideas. As life brought very difficult obstacles during this time in my life, I wanted to show that there was no time to flinch. I said: “A person has to move forward, as if in a storm, and not move a different direction when you are morally correct no matter the pain and suffering.” Read my Full Article about the backstory for this musical piece.

Trumpeter Scott Macomber wrote in the “Articles Written by Musicians and Fans of Music by Iosif Andriasov & Arshak Andriasov: “It was an exciting challenge and thrilling experience to perform in the 3rd & 4th California Andriasov Festival. Arshak’s Torch #1 is one of those rare pieces that looks treacherously difficult on the page but then comes together beautifully and naturally owing to its gorgeous melodies and ingenious orchestration. What a delight it was to work with an ensemble of such virtuosi!Full Article.
