Brass Trio for Piccolo Trumpet, Trombone, Horn, Op. 9.
I was commissioned by Trumpeter Todd Hayen to write a Brass Trio for Piccolo Trumpet, Trombone and Horn in 2011. It was premiered by Todd Hayen (Piccolo Trumpet), Jim McBride (Trombone), and Josiah Boothby (Horn) at Cornish College of the Arts in 2011.
This composition was written with many ideas in mind. There were several lyrical sections, many modern techniques, and other nature filled inspirations. One of those inspirations was bird that would arrive at a specific time of the day in Rochester, NY (where the composition was written). The bird would sing a rhythmic pattern, which I implemented into the Brass Trio for effect.
